Special Olympians benefit from new partnerships

04 August 2011

Three medal winning Shropshire athletes are amongst the first people to benefit from a new partnership between The Wrekin Housing Trust and Choices Housing Association; now providing homes and care services across the West Midlands.  To celebrate the coming together of the two organisations, the partnership has sponsored Gwilliam Jones, Briony Jones and Darren Roberts who have just returned triumphant from the Special Olympics World Games in Athens.

Their end of season party in Oswestry was the perfect time for Nigel Downs, Managing Director at Choices Housing Association to congratulate them on their success.

Briony won gold in the women's doubles badminton and bronze in the singles and Darren won bronze in the singles badminton; while in table tennis Gwilliam won silver in the singles and bronze in the mixed doubles.  It was a massive achievement considering there were 35 countries took part in the games, represented by more than 7,500 athletes.

Nigel Downs said: "The work of Val Hanover at North Shropshire Special Olympics and the achievements of Gwilliam, Briony and Darren epitomises everything Choices Housing Association represents and we are very proud to be involved with all of these groups.  We would also like to congratulate Val on her Pride of Shropshire Award."

Choices is dedicated to helping adults with learning and other disabilities to live as independently and as comfortably as possible, echoing the work of North Shropshire Special Olympics who have helped thousands of people with learning difficulties enrich their lives through sport.
